I´m still having a great time here in Costa Rica - only 2 weeks left. i should be able to get on the internet again this thursday, but that´ll probably be the last time i´m online in CR.
so, what's new here? well...
i went white water rafting again this long weekend, but with a whole new group of friends. the water was a little faster and crazier than before, and there were a couple of rapid that were pretty much like waterfalls; i was in the front of the raft, and going over the top and you're staring down into a whirlpool with the guy shouting "HARD FORWARD!! HARDER!! HARDER!!!" - it's still a mega rush and well worth doing again. no one fell out this time, but a lot of us got out for a swim in the lovely cool water. the guy taking the other raft didn't speak any english other than 'forward' backward' 'hard forward' and 'stop', and kept talking to the group in spanish, and only one of them spoke any spanish so they had no clue what he was saying! but they said that when tey got to one of the craziest waterfall-like rapids, the guy went "oh my god!" which doesn't fill you with hope - ha ha! but our raft was pretty well co-ordinated and we got over all the rapids just fine, even if it was excitingly scary at the time.
the new people drink far more alcohol than people did last phase, and they play dares quite often, some of which have been pretty funny, and have included eating a flower, drinking soy sauce and chilero, having your nose hairs plucked, sucking a teabag for 10 minutes, the removal of various items of clothing, snorting salt, eating flour, dancing in a gay way while being videod, kissing someone's arse cheek, but the funniest one was when someone spat into someone else's mouth, like a mother bird might regurgitate food into a baby bird's mouth. it was gross but hilarious. i shan't name names as i think they are probably embarrassed about the stuff they've done.... maybe not Rick though....
on the beach on nest check yesterday, Danya, Rich and i found a turtle, and thought it was dead... then realised it was alive.... then realised it was tied up... then realised it had tied itself up! it had got itself caught in some rope which was left on the beach, and Rich just had to pull the rope off from around its front flipper, and she was free to go. it appears that turtles don't have a 'reverse' gear, so she couldn't get free once she'd gone into it. how these animals have lasted 100 million years is remarkable. i guess there weren't many ropes in jurassic times though.
Kyle may have gone and Voyager discussions may have ceased, but i've found someone else who knows all the flags - it's Rich, who would have thought that the project leader knew them all, and we've been here all this time and not realised. the games which keep us going during times of boredom are 'name a country beginning with...' and we take it in turns. it's usually Danya who wants to play, even though me and Rich beat him at everything.
Oh, and for anyone interested in the Tico-Brit spotting contest, there were only 2 species in it as of yesterday, so Andres and Jon are still neck and neck. i'm off to Mexico before phase ends, so hopefully one of the interns can post it on the facebook group about who won.
what else? umm, there's a tiger heron which keeps hanging around base, especially near the compost heap! it stinks worse than ever, and t's now a daily task on camp duty to turn it over, although some people may have accidentally-on-purpose forgotten to do it. i know i did. something else weird (and disgusting) is that someone has been wrapping their shits in toilet paper and placing them in the burnables bin! what is wrong with people?! it did cross my mind as to whether someone had done it for a dare one time, but i know they wouldn't make the staff suffer like that for the sake of a dare. Andres said this is the third time it's happened, and he thinks it's because the poo was so big that the person was worried it wouldn't flush! how gross is that ?!
We are reaching the peak of the green turtle season, and it's now normal to see about 80 turtles a night, and for there to be about 90 tracks per eighth of a mile, meaning that you're shuffling your feet pretty much solidly for 3 miles! only one hawksbill so far has been worked though, but we have had 10 renesters now, and each one is given a name with the next letter of the alphabet, and we are up to Jamiroquai. the other day, i was on night walk with Molly, Danya and Casey, and we were sat down waiting for a turtle to arrive (there's so many now that you don't have to wait long) and a turtle came right past us - it was within a foot of Molly, and we all had to keep still and quiet so as not to scare it, but we were silently laughing and shaking up and down because it would drag itself a couple of 'steps', then look around, see us, and then carry on, then do it again. we were RIGHT next to it, and it was either oblivious or not worried about our presence! we named her helen kellar. i love turtles though - they are perhaps not that bright, but they are so gentle and harmless (except when they smack a flipper against you or flick sand in your face) that it's so hard to think why anyone would want to hurt them. they are pretty slow and defenceless; it's so wrong that anyone would try to get the better of them, when they are such simple, beautiful creatures. the rangers caught some poachers the other night, which is good to know, but the punishment for poaching is not high enough, and they may be back again. some eggs were taken the other week from a nest that had been triangulated - you feel violated on behalf of the turtle when that happens. but we are doing our bit, helping the turtles, and providing a presence on the beach to help deter poachers and to keep track (pun slightly intended!) of how many turtles come onto the beach to nest.
in other news.... Marcus shaved off his beard and looked unrecognisable until he'd got a few days growth back; Pablo the marine toad is still living happily in the big dorm; we still have a bat in our room on and off; i had to remove a four-lined whiptail (small lizard) from our room the other day as he'd come in and got stuck in our window. i quite liked the feel of him in my hand, but he was really wriggly and squirmy, and leapt out of my hands from a great height once i'd taken him outside. i hope he comes back though. the weather continues to alternate between hot (35'C?) and torrential rain, and the drainpipes installed by Trent are a great addition to the camp. (Trent is one of the funniest, craziest people you will ever meet who was here for 2 weeks; love him or hate him, you'll never forget him!) Casey and i have painted a map of the edible plants at camp, and we now try to eat more of the stuff that was there all along but we didn't realise it. food continues to involve rice, spaghetti and beans a lot of the time, though some people are more inventive. i don't really miss any food from home; i can still buy chocolate here!

Turtle-saving, wasps, and grossness
well it's just over a week since i wrote the lastthe last email....
thought i'd elaborate a bit more on my last few weeks, and some of the best memories:
EPIC THUNDERSTORM
picture the scene... it's a night walk, and i'm with Sarah, Kyle and Molly.... it starts off really dark, and we can barely see... then we find a hawksbill turtle which are fairly rare around here, so that was exciting in itself, and then we tag and measure her, and her shell had bioluminescence so we are marvelling at it and rubbing it as it was really cool, then it starts t orain. and by rain, i mean as if you are standing in a waterfall, so much water that you can't see... and there was thunder, and lightning so bright that it lit up the beach as bright as day, so you could see for several miles in that split second. we couldn't see because we had that much water pouring onto us (and by the way, when you get wet, you get covered in sand, and you can't get the sand off) so we stood under a tree (the lightning was far away) and then to amuse ourselves, played slackjaw, where you have to let your jaw hang down and look gormless, and the first one to laugh loses. it was really funny.... plus we (mainly kyle) started saying vulgar things in what was possibly very bad spanish... i'm not sure why father christmas got brought into it, but much was said along the lines of "papa noel tiene huevos muchas grandes.... papa noel es numero uno porno estraella.... todos los chicas amore papa noel...." it was hysterical but maybe you had to be there, delirious with hunger, tiredness, and going mad because of the thunderstorm... but it may just have been the company :D we finally gave up trying to find our way through the thunderstorm, and went back to camp, where the single 'after' shot turned into a slackjaw zombie extravaganza - check out the facebook photos!! that was a fun night.
FREEING A TURTLE
on another day, i was out on a nest check (seeing how many nests were laid the previous night) with Deanna, Rachel and Molly, and we saw a turtle that was on the beach in the morning, and when we looked closer we realised that she was tied up to a piece of driftwood. Rachel had a penknife with her which Molly used to cut through the string which was so tight it was cutting into the turtle's flipper - it was really disturbing. on clear nights, poachers come up onto the beach and steal freshly laid eggs. this is really disturbing, but doesn't seem as bad as catching tutrles and killing them for meat. but even that doesn't seem as bad (in some ways) as tying a turtle to a piece of wood, and leaving her there in pain to die of starvation if no one finds her. well thankfully we did find her, cut her free, and watched as she went off into the ocean. she was all weak and disorientated at first, but finally we saw her go off into the sae - hopefully, she'll renest again in a week or two, and not be grabbed by evil people from right under our noses.
WASP STINGS GALORE
this week, we were out on an incidentals walk - i was with Jon (staff) and Sonja (other volunteer) and we found a turtle in the cocnut plantation at about 6am, which is really weird as they are normally all back in the sea by that time (it's braod daylight) and moreover, when they nest, they do so on the beach, and never go in amongst the coconut trees - so it was really stange to see her there. obviously, we needed to intervene to try and get her back to the sea; she was clearly disorientated and tired, and they weigh an absolute ton, so the way to get them to move is really to stand behind them or to the side, and they'll go away from you, so you can guide them back to sea in this way. so we were doing this, and suddenly jon yells out in pain - a wasp had stung him on hte head... then within seconds, all 3 of us were getting stung and/or having these big black wasps buzzing round our faces and bodies. i looked up and saw that sonja had run off and was shouting at me to run, but i'd been stung in the ear and it was really hurting, plus the waspss were still stinging her and Jon even though they'd moved away from the nest. then suddenly, i got stung in the eye, and screamed out; it felt like i'd been stabbed in the eye, and still more were buzzing round me. i kind of ran off with jon, but still screaming/crying and not able to see properly... we got away from them, and the whole episode probably only lasted a minute. we took stock to assess the damage; jon had been stung on the face, and on the finger (when he was pulling a wasp out of my hair); sonja had been stung on the cheek, arm, and back, but i'd got the worst of it, and been stung on the neck, ear, and eye. they all hurt but the eye was the worst. two lucky things were that we were only 5 minutes away from camp, and that the wasp had not stung me directly on the eyeball, but just above the eyelid. howerever, unfortunately, all the sting treatments said keep out of the eyes, so even though we all put cream on ourselves / each other's bites, the only thing i could do for the eye was to keep it cool, which is easier said than done in the 30'C heat, where we don't have fridges or freezers. it swelled up quite a bit on the first day, and i couldn't really open my eye, but now (3 days on) it is back to normal and feels fine. the swelling has gone and i can harldy beleive it was only a few days ago - it healed pretty quick, considering, so don't go worrying mum!!
IN OTHER NEWS....
i have uploaded a load of photos onto facebook - lots of slackjawing and nest excavations with kyle and sarah... i've tried to upload the rapper video but i'm not sure if that's worked or not - that was so much fun - in itself worth not going to panama for!!
so last week, the first phase of 5-weekers left, and the next phase of 5 and 2-weekers arrived - the last phase of five weekers were Sarah, Kyle, Melissa, Kirsty, Johannah, Edouard, Herman, Melissa and Sam (and Patrick and Paula)... People who are here for the whole 10 weeks (or more) are Marcus, Arno, Sonja, Lauren, Karen, and Deanna. Our new people are Rick, Marshall, Danya, Debbie, Kara, Trent, Laura, Casey, Julia, Emma, Alice, Steph, Suzie, who are all from the USA or England, apart from Casey who is Aussie.... so there's still plenty of potential for discussions of accents and words (biscuits, nappies, etc), cockney rhyming slang, and arguments about guns. this last one has already happened actually, which got quite heated and people almost fell out about it!! I am at the moment quieter than i was before... without Kyle provoking me into crude stupidity, i'm having to talk about real issues with people.... this is what i meant when i said that if my personality was severed in two like B'elanna Torres was, where one part was Klingon and one part was human - my two parts are the Intellectual, and the Vulgar, sweary eccentric; i was the latter, but now, for the time being at least, i'm having to tend more towards the former. OH, and if you don't know what i'm talking about, you obviously weren't listening close enough during the 20-hour Voyager questioning marathon (old 5-weekers), and people at home, well you'll just have to watch more Star Trek.
also, the turtle nest board is now in use, and has all our nests marked on it :D it's beautiful! :D
OH, and by popular request (from people who were here last phase) i´m also going to post my "list of things that are gross at home but are normal here!"

well it´s the end of the first 5 weeks now, and that means saying goodbye to some really good friends... we´ve had some great times togetehr and i´m really going to miss people.... who will I discuss Voyager with if Kyle goes? Who will make even the most dull tasks fun, if not Sarah? anyway, the days are going on much the same as ever, doing bird surveys, turtle surveys, getting rained on, gettting burnt, getting bçitten by insects, hasving no water and having to get it out of a well with a bucket... but i´m loving it and glad i´m still staying... i hope the new group of people are a s cool and as much fun as those who are leaving...
in the mentime, here are some memorable moments of the last 5 weeks, in no real order: Some of these will only make sense to people who were there at the time, because this is a blog entry aimed primarily at the people who re about to leave - i´ll miss you guys!!. time is short so it´s a bit of a list - five weekers, feel free to elaborate or comment!! suffice it to say i´m having fun and it´s great out here. :o)
- White water rafting and Arno´s birthday, including the breaking of glass and the pinata
- Lauren checking how sharp Kyle´s machete was by rubbing it across her neck
- "Slackjaw 3-2-1" with Sarah
- Seeing hatchlings make it to the sea
- "I´m an emergency first responder, may i help you?"
- Sam saying "Yo, gimme your pictures, man!"
- Herman flicking a bug into my mouth
- Swimming and shaving in the sea

- The epic rainstorm with Molly, Sarah and Kyle, the slackjaw zombie photos, Kyle and me saying "Papa noel es numero uno porno estrella", and other poorly translated vulgarities
- Andres and Jon´s Tico vs Brit spotting contest
- Being gangsta rappers with Kyle
- Plying Ring of Fire at Arno´s birthday
- Cockroaches in the games in the kiçtchen, and the biggest cockraoch ever during the Big Clean
- Explaining cockney rhyming slang to the Americans
- the epic excavation with Kyle going chest-deep into a tutle nest
- Edouard pushing Arno´s face into the birthday cake
- Recognising bird calls!
- "Would one care to experience coitus with one?" - British chat-up line

Rafting 101
I meant to upload this on 22.7.2010 but it didn´t work. here it is:
well we are back in Siquirres now, having just finished our 2'day white water rafting trip. it was BRILLIANT.... am definitely keen to do it again.the weather has been lovely and warm, and the water was cold, but once you were covered in it, which happened within a few minutes of getting on board, it felt nice.
the rapids were really strong in places, and we (5 of us) all got chucked out. unfortunately i fell under the boat and took in 2 or 3 luingfulls of air, which was definitely not fun... but the rest of it was great, and we volultarily got in and swam in some places, and we rode rapids of up to Class 4 and there are only 5 categories so that was pretty crazy. when someone gets tossed out, it´s everyone´s job to pull them back in, so we did a bit of that too...
anyway it was a real rush to do it, and the guy was giving us commands like ´forward... FORWARD HARD! FORWRAD HARD!´ and it really makes you work hard, especially after that first time we got chucked out.
in the evening, it was one of the lad´s birthdays... hes called Arno and he was 21, and we got him a pinana ... not sure how to spell it... and you had to hit it with a stick and sweets fell out... we blindfolded him, and he smashed some bottles and totally missed i... so then we unblindfolded him, and this time he smashed a vase... ah well, we had been drinking and playing this stupid game called ring of fire which was hilarious but very stupid and drunken, and most of us haven´t really drunk in the past 3 weeks,s o a few drinks seemed to get us all hammered and foolish. i took a load of videos but most of them are just blackness and so much noise you can´t tell what anyone´s saying. maybe when i upload them to the copueter they´ll be a bit better. ... next time i get online i`´ll bring my camera and lead so hopefully can uplaood some phootos.

the rapids were really strong in places, and we (5 of us) all got chucked out. unfortunately i fell under the boat and took in 2 or 3 luingfulls of air, which was definitely not fun... but the rest of it was great, and we volultarily got in and swam in some places, and we rode rapids of up to Class 4 and there are only 5 categories so that was pretty crazy. when someone gets tossed out, it´s everyone´s job to pull them back in, so we did a bit of that too...
anyway it was a real rush to do it, and the guy was giving us commands like ´forward... FORWARD HARD! FORWRAD HARD!´ and it really makes you work hard, especially after that first time we got chucked out.
